Although it was initially given in a statement that two soldiers were actually involved in the shooting that took the life of a police sergeant identified as onalaja onajide attached to ilemba Hausa Police division where the statement put that those soldiers shot and killed the slain sergeant and that the Divisional police officer was said to have escaped as a result.
But inputting the whole developments in proper perspective, the Lagos state police public relation officer Dsp Bala Elkana said in a statement made available to urban express news online that the initial report forwarded by the Divisional police officer, CSP Yahaya Adeshina did not properly indicate a true reflection of what happened, but rather, he said following other report received by the command alleging the Divisional police officer Csp Yahaya Adeshina of shooting the sergeant while dispersing crowds that gathered in front of the station, the DPO has been arrested and detained at the state criminal investigation Department (CID) for investigation.
Elkana said his riffle is retrieved for forensic examination adding that the command has equally ordered that an autopsy be carried out on the deceased person.
The commissioner of police express his heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the fallen colleague and assured them that the command will stand with them in this moment of grief and ensure that justice prevails.
The spokesman said the shooting incident happened on 10-05-2020, adding that the report forwarded to the headquarters by the Divisional police officer on 16-05-2020 stated that unknown gunmen fired a gunshot at the Divisional Police officer, ilemba Hausa and the station guard, sergeant onajide onalaja.
The statement accordingly put that while the DPO survived the gunshot, the station guard did not.
He said the DPO further reported that two suspects were arrested in connection with the crime; elkana added “the two suspects initially arrested are suspects to be disserted soldiers saying the command will hand them over to the military authority for further investigation”.
Meanwhile operatives of Lagos state police command had equally arrested another police inspector, identified as Charles Okoro for allegedly shooting and killing one fatai oladipupo.
The statement put further that the shooting incident was reported along obabiyi, igando police division as a result of the death of the said fatai oladipupo, a 28-year-old with residence at obabiyi along ikotun, an outskirt of Lagos state.
Elkana said the inspector has been subjected to internal disciplinary procedures known as orderly room trial at the state provost department and if found guilty, he will be handed over to the state criminal investigation department for further prosecution in conventional court.
He said investigation is ongoing to unravel the circumstances surrounding the shooting incident.
