Operatives of the Lagos state police command has arrested a 22-year-old Maliki Bello at itire who is said to be the supreme leader of a notorious Berry Boys secret cult situated at itire.
In a statement made available to urban express news online through the Police Public Relation officer, Dsp Bala Elkana said police special strike force on social miscreants led by the itire Divisional Police officer Sp Barkfur kromkyes, apprehended the supreme leader of Berry Boys secret cult with the operational base at itire.
The apprehended cult leader is said to be a native of lalopun in Kwara state and presently reside at 23 Ayinla street idiaraba area before his arrest.
Elkana said the cult leader Maliki has been on wanted list of the police for violent crimes and gang clashes adding that the suspect had confessed to be responsible for a series of violent attacks, murders and armed robberies incidents recorded in idiaraba, lawanson, Dosumu, Ashimowo Bakare, Omo-bola Mushin and itire.
“The suspect told detectives that he was initiated into the cult at the age 12 when he was in junior secondary school (jss1) as the later rose to the number one position and he is mostly addressed as the supreme leader of the berry boy’s confraternity”
He said the gang has an official Facebook page ( Bbi Bolatelli) with 1, 928 friends.
The spokesman was quoted as saying that the suspect, Maliki use their Facebook page and other social media account to recruit new members, plan attacks and give updates to members.
He said an investigation into the matter led to the arrest of 11 additional suspects.
“The commissioner of police Lagos state, cp Hakeem Odumosu has further reaffirmed the commitment of the command to address the menace of cultism and youths gangsterism in Lagos state”.
“The onslaught on social miscreants launched by the commissioner of police is intelligence-driven, targeting mostly leaders of gangs, cult groups and blocking the channels through which they recruit young people.
Elkana said the special strike force on social miscreants has successfully brought under control the activities of various cults and gangs in the state through well-coordinated and targeted operations adding that it will be sustained until they are totally defeated.
Meanwhile command had also picked a man that was said to have attempted to kill his wife at Bariga.
The statement put further that one Christopher lament, a 45-year-old residence of Jossy Castro Street attempted to kill wife identified as comfort Christopher with a knife.
The spokesman said the woman was rescued by the police following a distress call received adding that the knife was recovered and registered as exhibit.
He said the couple were married for 13 years and blessed with two children with age-grade between 11 and 9-years, adding that both are from Akwa-Ibom state.
Elkana said the suspect lost his banking job 5-year-past while the wife is not working
He added “the couple were having series of crisis underpinned on matrimonial rascality and lack of maintenance as this was the event that to the attempt made by the suspect to stab the victim with a knife, which started with a mere argument.
Elkana said investigation is ongoing and suspect will be charged to court.
