Lagos state police command has arrested a 26-year-old lady for faking own kidnap with her male counterpart in other to extort money from her employer.
Explaining further, the Lagos state police public relation officer Dsp Bala Elkana said operatives from anti-kidnapping unit arrested one 26-year-old Ataghar Namdoo for faking her own kidnap after conspiring with her boyfriend identified as Emmanuel idu and another accomplice with name okpe David.
Elkana said the duo Emmanuel idu and okpe David produced a short video showing Ataghar Namdoo who happened to be Emmanuel idu girl-friend indicating how she was blindfolded and driven to the bush in a truck.
“In the second video, Ataghar, a mother of one was seen in a bush at sangotedo Area in Ajah threatened by a man wearing a mask and holding a jackknife where police later identified the said individual behind the masked as Emmanuel idu who happened to be her boyfriend.
The spokesman said the abductors were demanding for ten million Naira as ransom in the video, adding that the two videos were sent to the lady’s employer with a threat to kill her and also go after the family of the employer if the ransom in the video is not paid.
“Freighted by the threat contained in the video and the follow-up calls, the said employer who is into fleet business reported the case to the police”.
On the receipt of the case, the Lagos state commissioner of police, cp Hakeem Odumosu ordered the anti-kidnapping unit to carry out an in-depth investigation into the case”.
He said this was how the video was thoroughly analyzed alongside other vital leads.
Elkana said a well-coordinated operation was put in place which led to the successful rescue of the self-arranged victim of the abduction and the arrest of one of the two suspects, okpe David.
''The command has taken a step to verify the claim made by David okpe that he was a military personnel, adding that police have equally launched a manhunt of the second suspect, Emmanuel idu, who is on the run".
The spokesman said David okpe confessed to have provided the truck used in driving the lady to the bush, and that the said truck was actually driven by him.
He said the suspect also confessed to have recorded the video sent to the employer of the lady, adding, "all the three suspects Benue are Benue state origin.
“The suspects have known each other for so many years as both the lady and the suspects arrested had confessed to the commission of the crime saying their aim is to extort money from the girl’s an employer which they intend to share among themselves”.
“It is worthy of note that, it is a criminal offence for anyone to fake his or her kidnapping under the Lagos state laws as the offender upon conviction is liable to 14 years imprisonment”.
Elkana said suspects will be charged to court.
