Kofi Annan; An Era Shuts Down BY OLUSEGUN ARIYO

With the despairing news of the death of former United Nation Secretary General, Kofi Anan, more tributes and encomium has continued to pour in essentially through the online media medium.
This is coming after his demise as many believed it was a shot down of an era, others say some of his exemplary leadership disposition would remain evergreen in the anal of things to come.
One of his notable quotes that fluke every space essentially on Facebook was “if one is going to err, one should err on the side of liberty and freedom”


The importance of liberty and freedom to every existing being, many believe has been his yardstick for discussing the ingredients of liberating the change in the narrative about Africa and indeed all hasn't changed even till death.
 Kofi Anan was indeed a man who had the people at heart and this, many believed had propel him to always think of the dignity of the human race and the right of every man.
Indeed, the world has lost one of its finest diplomats who will be remembered for reshaping and vitalizing the UN, giving priority to Human Rights, fighting for the control of the spread of HIV in Africa and his declared opposition to terrorism.
Being the first real Black African Secretary-General of the United Nations, he has set a pace at the forefront for Africans and we can only hope to keep up and maintain his stance.
Kofi Annan through his foundation, Kofi Annan Foundation has left a legacy which leaves its indelible marks on the shores of history.
Announcing his demise, the Kofi Anan foundation describes his death as a peaceful pass away saying an era is shut down.

“It is with immense sadness that the Annan family and the Kofi Annan Foundation announce that Kofi Annan, former Secretary General of the United Nations and Nobel Peace Laureate, passed away peacefully on Saturday 18th August after a short illness. His wife Nane and their children Ama, Kojo and Nina were by his side during his last days”.
“Kofi Annan was a global statesman and a deeply committed internationalist who fought throughout his life for a fairer and more peaceful world. During his distinguished career and leadership of the United Nations, he was an ardent champion of peace, sustainable development, human rights and the rule of law”.
“After stepping down from the United Nations, he continued to work tirelessly in the cause of peace through his chairmanship of the Kofi Annan Foundation and as chair of The Elders, the group founded by Nelson Mandela. He was an inspiration to young and old alike”.

Part of what the foundation said Kofi Annan believes in; was special responsibility towards Africa.
Accordingly, it said the former United Nation’s Scribe was particularly committed to African development and deeply engaged in many initiatives, including his chairmanship of the Africa Progress Panel and his early leadership of the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA).
“Wherever there was suffering or need, he reached out and touched many people with his deep compassion and empathy”.

“He selflessly placed others first, radiating genuine kindness, warmth and brilliance in all he did. He will be greatly missed by so many around the world, as well as his staff at the Foundation and his many former colleagues in the United Nations system”.

Meanwhile, President Mohammadu Buhari has described the former first elected staff of the united nation, late Kofi Anan as an exceptional leader whose role in Africa’s development would forever be missed.

in a statement issued through presidential media Aide, Femi Adeshina; said as the first elected staff of the United Nations to lead the world organisation and first African to win the 2001 Nobel Peace Prize jointly with the United Nations, the President noted that Annan’s humility, nobility and love for humanity set him apart for global greatness, achieving recognition and commendation for the reform of the United Nations' bureaucracy and multiple interventions to bring peace to the world.

He said Annan’s origin and home will always be traced to Ghana, but his exceptional leadership roles, humanitarian spirit and contributions to global peace and 
development will remain indelible in the history of the entire world, especially the efforts to combat HIV/AIDS in Africa and launch of the UN Global Compact, whilst pray almighty to comfort his family and his loved ones
